Denzel Curry transcends the Soundcloud rap genre with TA1300, his hotly anticipated third album released on PH Recordings and Loma Vista Recordings. TA1300 pronounced Taboo, comes out supported by the singles “PERCS,” and “CLOUT COBAIN.” The versatile rapper switches styles seamlessly while transforming from stoned out prophet on “SIRENS,” to manic, trap obsessed diss rapper on “Sumo.
The 23-year-old South Florida born rapper describes the project as being divided into three separate Acts: Light, Gray, and Dark. Although there are strong tracks all throughout the album’s thirteen-song length, TA1300 peaks early with the Light Act representing the strongest grouping of songs. Opener “TABOO,” channels Kendrick Lamar’s good kid, m.A.A.d city as he muses about a girl who was “molested when she hit the age of five.” The line stands as the album’s most emotionally shocking moment, while “SUMO,” shows Curry embracing his Soundcloud rap genre roots with the memorable line “pockets too big they Sumo.”
“CLOUT COBAIN,” references, of course, the late Nirvana rapper who recently found himself an idol amongst fellow Soundcloud rap genre fallen stars such as XXXTentacion and Lil Peep. The song playfully flirts around the topic of how Cobain killed himself, with a refrain which chants about “Suicide doors,” but the song takes a dark turn when Curry hints at his insecurities when he raps “I just want to feel myself, you want me to kill myself.”
TA1300 is Curry’s most complete statement to date. Loaded with guest appearances from JPEGMAFIA, Billie Eilish, GoldLink, it’s a critically acclaimed album which will no doubt introduce the young rapper to a larger audience. The skill set he puts on display throughout the album proves his staying power and elevates his talents into a different group separated from SmokePurpp, and Ski Mask the Slump God. Highly recommended.
